Resveratrol in Bars
January 14, 2010 by DSM
Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant produced by certain plants as part of their defense system against environmental stress and disease. Consumer awareness of resveratrol has risen dramatically over the past 12 months following mentions on 60 Minutes and Oprah, among others that highlighted research linking resveratrol to healthy aging.
While many consumers are aware that wine is a natural source of resveratrol, most do not realize that the content in wine is minimal (i.e. 0.5 mg per glass of red wine). A healthy dose of resveratrol is 100 mg per day based on our first human study, which clinically demonstrated the potential for resveratrol to improve cardiovascular health. Resveratrol in effective amounts has been available for some time in dietary supplements, however, it’s supplementation in foods such as bars was not possible until recently when DSM Nutritional Products achieved self GRAS status for its resVida® Resveratrol brand for inclusion in foods. GRAS status is a designation used by the Food and Drug Administration to identify an ingredient as Generally Recognized as Safe.
Winetime Bar (www.winetimebar.com ), the first bar containing DSM’s resVida Resveratrol, was introduced in late 2009 and has received positive reviews in terms of innovation, taste, and product package. For more information on resveratrol, our resVida brand and applications in nutritional bars, please contact me or a DSM representative through our company profile on the BarsAreFood.com website.
